About :: The Filmmaker

Dorothy Fadiman has been producing award-winning documentary media with an emphasis on human rights since 1976. Her subjects range widely from nuclear arms control to progressive education, and include the trilogy on the history of abortion rights (now available in six languages).

"My motivation for this work was personal. In 1961, there were no safe choices; contraception was not a legal option for unmarried women, and safe legal abortions were not available. I became unintentionally pregnant. As a result of these conditions, I almost died from a back-alley abortion, performed with no anaesthetic."

Dorothy's other works related to women's reproductive health and rights are WOMAN by WOMAN: New Hope for the Villages of India and FROM RISK to ACTION: Women and HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia (co-produced with Amy Hill).
